Stroke

A stroke is occurs when blocked or ruptured artery suddenly deprives the brain of oxygen-rich blood ,potentially leading to permanent detrimental effects on physical and emotional well-being .Speech, vision, movement, and sensation are most commonely compromising by a stroke.
Their are two types of strokes.

1        Hemorrhagic stroke-This stroke caused by a ruptured bleeding artery in the brain. This type of strokes are less common.

2        Ischemic strokes-This occurs due to blockage of blood clot in brain ,which stops the flow of blood.A clot usually  forms as a result of fatty plaque buildup that narrow arteries near or in the brain and impedes circulation .A clot may also form in another part of the body, travel, and lodge in a blood vessel that nourishes the brain .

Food is an important factor:
Eating a low fat diet rich in vegetables and fruits significantly protects against strokes. One study found that people who ate vegetables six to seven days per week cut their risk  for stroke by over 50%.Eating plenty of whole grains is more important for stroke protection as well the data suggest a whole -grain diet may reduce risk for the condition.Several Nutrients and Phytochemicals plentiful in produce and whole-grains which content Calcium,Flavonoids,fiber,Magnesium,Omega-3 fatty acids,Potassium,Resveratrol and Vitamin-C have shown promise in protecting against condition.
Scientific evidence is accumulating that free-radical-fighting antioxidants,such as Resveratrol and selenium. These may protect against ischemic Strokes.Researchers believe Vitamin-E may protect against stroke by squelching free radicals  and inhibiting oxidation of LDL(Bad cholesterol),Which can clog arteries and contribute to stroke.
There is growing evidence that elevated levels of the amino acid homo cysteine, long linked to heart attacks, may also up the risk for stroke. As level of homo-cysteine increase stroke risk tends to increase as well. The B Vitamins like Folate,  Vitamin-B6,and Vitamin B-12 appear to team up to lower homo-cysteine levels.According to a study When participants adopted a high -Folate diet average   homo-cysteine levels dropped by 7%.
Citrus fruits and lentils are excellent sources of Folate, and sea food is high in B6 and B12.
High blood pressure and high cholesterol can also increase the risk for stroke.

Food to be suggested.:

  1. Calcium-Broccoli,dairy products,figs,Ragi
  2. Dietary Fibers-Asparagus,beets,lentils,whole grains, green leafy vegetables and fruits.
  3. Flavonoids-Apple,Berries,Onion.
  4. Omega-3 fatty acids-Fatty fish,Shellfish, Flex seeds
  5. Potassium-Bananas,Orange juice,Potatoes.
  6. Resveratrol-Peanuts,Red grapes,Red wine.
  7. Vitamin-C-Citrus fruits,Kiwifruit,Melons
